Why “ranking on Google” isn’t enough anymore and what to do instead.
For years, photographers have been told the same thing: get on page one of Google. Optimize your alt text. Build backlinks. Fix your Google Business Profile.
To be clear, that advice still matters. But it’s no longer the whole game.
Your ideal clients aren’t just typing into a search bar anymore. They’re asking ChatGPT to “find me a family photographer that offers in-home shoots.” Or, “What happens if we have to postpone pictures because of our NICU baby?”
They’re scrolling Instagram like a search engine, reading bios instead of clicking links. They’re getting AI Overviews at the top of Google before they ever see an actual website.
This shift has a name: AEO or Answer Engine Optimization. And most photographers haven’t touched it yet, which means there’s a real window right now to get ahead. I first learned about this at a local business summit when I was shown the differences in the two and it has changed the way I create all content for my business. I’ve been doing the quiet work on the back end of my website to help my clients find me. Not just through SEO but now through AEO as well.
SEO was built for a world where a person typed a phrase, scanned ten blue links, and clicked one. AI search doesn’t work that way. AI tools read your content, summarize it, and hand your potential client an answer. Sometimes without ever sending them to your site(you know, the one you spent hours creating😮💨).
That means the question isn’t just “can Google find me?” anymore. It’s “can an AI assistant understand exactly who I am, who I serve, and why I’m the right fit well enough to recommend me by name?”
If your bio, website, and content are vague, AI can’t categorize you. And if it can’t categorize you, it won’t recommend you.
Think of your name field and bio (on Instagram, your website, everywhere) as metadata. It’s the first thing an AI crawler (and a human) uses to understand what you do and who you’re for.
The name field. Don’t just put your name. Structure it so it tells a search engine exactly what to file you under:
[Your Name] | [Your Niche] Photographer in [Your City]
Example: Tiffany Crenshaw | Newborn & Family Photographer in Huntsville
The problem-solving bio. AI search and human clients respond to language that names a problem and a solution. Instead of “capturing life’s beautiful moments,” try language that answers a real search intent: who you help, what they’re struggling with, and what you deliver.
Google is totally fangirling over FAQ’s right now when it comes to AEO. Because remember, the goal is to connect google’s users with people that can provide what they are looking for. So when most people search right now they are doing it in question for . Your FAQ sections on your website can help them find those answers. I suggest putting an FAQ section on each of your main pages. So for me that would be my home page, my individual service pages, contact page and investment page. This gives you several opportunities for potential clients to find the answers they are looking for.
Run through this checklist on your own website and social media profiles:
If you checked fewer than three boxes, you likely have a visibility leak. That means clients are searching for exactly what you offer, and neither Google nor AI tools can confidently connect the dots to you.
AEO isn’t about chasing a trend. It’s about making sure the work you’re already doing (beautiful images, a real point of view, a specific niche ) is actually findable by the people looking for it. Being talented and invisible online isn’t a strategy. It’s a leak.
That’s exactly what we dig into inside the Fall Visibility Challenge– a free, step-by-step walk-through to help you plug the gaps in how clients (and AI) find you online. If this post highlighted a few leaks of your own, that’s your sign to join. This challenge will walk you through 10 days of becoming visible. And we know visibility is precursor to booked, so I’d say it’s pretty important!
